Science Project
To complete your 3 credits to go towards your Academic Band, you must complete enough activities below to earn 20 points. There is no time frame for this activity - completing all 20 points in 6 weeks or a Term, all timeframes are acceptable. Work to your own schedule to complete the points. All work must be to a high personal standard. Any help needed see Mrs W.
Make hokey pokey by putting 4 tablespoons of sugar and 2 of golden syrup in a saucepan. Bring to the boil and simmer gently for about 5 minutes. Then add a heaped teaspoon of baking soda and stir vigorously. Put in a greased dish to cool. heating baking soda releases CO which makes the hokey pokey rise. Show a sample to your teacher (3 points)

Keep a record of the growth of a flower from the bud to the fruit or seed. Sketch or photograph each stage and describe these stages. (3 points)

Explain how rain, hail and snow are formed.(3 points)

Put a balloon over the neck of a plastic bottle. Place it in the sun and observe what happens. Paint the bottle black or a dark colour and try the experiment again. Suggest reason/s for any differences you observe. (3 points)

Build a car or boat which is powered only by a balloon. Modify your design so that it will go further than your first attempts. (3 points)

You have been asked to trial three brands of cat or dog food. Describe how you would test which the animal preferred. For an extra * carry out the trial on your pet and record the result(4 points)

Photograph six different car or bike tyre treads. Use to make a poster explaining how scientists identify the nature of the get away vehicle based on tyre marks left behind,

Find several different types of paper (eg newsprint, toilet paper, paper bag, airmail letter etc). Measure and record how hard they are to tear when dry and when wet. If possible, look at each under a microscope and report how they differ. Record your results on a chart.(4 points)

After sunset, use a white sheet and a bright light to attract insects. Keep a record of different insects that turn up. You may be able to use a camera or video to help you. Classify the insects into groups. Show your results as a table of data.(4 points)

Make some yoghurt, either by using some fresh, plain yoghurt as a starter or a commercial packet. Bring your yoghurt to school. Find out what type of organism makes milk into yoghurt and how it does it (4 points)
